A number of events took place during Capital City College’s Multicultural Week to bring together the college community in a celebration of different cultures.
With a student body spanning many continents, the Capital City College (CCC) community embraces a rich and diverse range of cultures. Every year, the college hosts Multicultural Week in celebration of the exciting variety of cultures across the college.
This year’s Multicultural Week, which ran from 11 to 15 November, was no different, with over 50 events taking place across a number of our centres.
The week kicked off with a series of talks at the Finsbury Park centre from guest speakers including local MP Jeremy Corbyn. There was a great turnout of staff and students who came together to celebrate the rich diversity that defines the CCC community.
The guest speakers brought their unique perspectives and insights regarding multiculturalism and inclusivity to the event and spoke about the importance of celebrating diverse cultures. The talks were followed by a range of student performances including music and poetry performances which showcased the talent, creativity and cultural richness of the college’s student body.
Assistant Principal Seval Fadil said: “The event was a powerful reminder of the importance of unity and understanding in our increasingly diverse world. It’s days like this that truly highlight the strength we find in our differences and the sense of belonging that multiculturalism brings to our school community. I want to extend a huge thank you to everyone who contributed to making this day such a success – from our dedicated staff and talented students to the insightful guest speakers and incredible performers. Your involvement and enthusiasm truly made this event one to remember.”
The college’s sociology department also hosted a number of events to encourage students to celebrate multiculturalism. On 13 November, An event titled Black Girls, Girlhood and Education welcomed Alison Wiggins from the Institute of Education for an exploration of black girls and young women in the education system.
Students from the college’s Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy courses celebrated multiculturalism at the Finsbury Park centre with an afternoon of relaxing treatments. Around 35 Hair and Beauty students from Beauty Therapy Level 2 Diploma and Hairdressing Level 2 Diploma courses were joined by a number of international students visiting from South Korea to run the popular event. As part of their courses, the Hair and Beauty learners are taught to work on all skin and hair types, which enables them to safely and professionally deliver treatments to a wide range of clients.
During the event, the Hair and Beauty students used their knowledge and skills to offer hand and nail treatments as well as different hair services. The students also displayed a number of training heads to celebrate different types of hair and showcase a range of hairstyles. The event celebrated the diversity of the student and staff community at the Finsbury Park centre by welcoming people with a range of hair and skin types to receive a range of treatments.
At the King’s Cross centre, students set up an art and photography exhibition to highlight different cultures and celebrate creativity across a range of different media. There was also a celebration of dance on 12 November, with an energetic capoeira performance and interactive dance session led by a Brazilian dance group (see video below).
Some of the activities organised by college staff members stretched beyond Multicultural Week such as a lunchtime talent showcase that took place on 26 November. The event celebrated the brilliance and beauty of the various cultures within the college as students delivered a range of music, performance and spoken word poetry performances.
At CCC, we are proud to celebrate the diversity of our college community and are committed to promoting and maintaining equality, diversity and inclusion across all aspects of college life.
