Key Stage 4 Provision

Accredited Alternative Education Provision

Capital City College Group offers accredited alternative education provision for Key Stage 4 pupils, aged 14-16 years old. The courses we offer provide knowledge, experience and the vital employability skills required by employers.

Offering a highly inclusive, safe environment that fosters a culture of mutual respect and tolerance for students and staff, our Key Stage 4 provision offers QCF-based qualifications that transforms lives, with high achievement rates that exceed national averages.

We are a specialist Digital Careers College and Health and Social Care Careers College, with outstanding local and regional relationships that produce meaningful work experience, with a strong career-focused ethos.

Our King’s Cross Centre in Grays Inn Road (8 minutes walk from King’s Cross tube station) is fully DDA compliant, safe, bright and spacious offering the best possible learning environment.

Aims and Objectives

Our Key Stage 4 provision aims to:

  1. Meet the DfE, Local Authority and schools’ requirements for Alternative Provision
  2. Re-engage young people disapplied from the National Curriculum at Key Stage 4
  3. Motivate young people to achieve and progress
  4. Progress students from Year 10 into Year 11, and in turn onto Further Education, employment or an Apprenticeship

Our offer includes both one day per week ‘day release’ courses from Entry Level to Level 2 along with full time alternative provision courses. We interview each student so that we can advise and guide them to the right course for them.

Students can choose subject areas according to their interests, abilities, and intended career aims. An individual learning plan is prepared and carried out within well equipped workshops and classrooms.

CANDI – Full-Time

GCSE Programme
Year 11
Duration: Full-time, 5 days per week over 36 weeks
Level: Level 2
Performance Points: GCSEs in Maths, English and Applied Science and Technology Level 1 Certificate

This GCSE programme is designed as an alternative programme for learners who are in Year 11 and suitable for a GCSE course, but are either having difficulty in a school environment or displaced through circumstances. It integrates:
• GCSE English
• GCSE Maths
• Applied Science and Technology – Level 1 Certificate (Gateway)
• Skills for Employment, Training and Personal Development – Level 1 NOCN
• Vocational Pathway Option (see vocational pathway tab)

Accelerate
Year 10 or Year 11
Duration: Full-time, 5 days per week over 36 weeks
Level: Entry Level 3 – Level 2
Performance Points: Based on Individual Learning Plan

The Accelerate programme is designed to cater for disaffected learners, excluded learners or those not progressing well in traditional school education. This course is truly personalised and integrates:
• Foundation Learning units through Personal and Social Development 
• English, Maths and ICT – Entry Level to Level 2 Functional Skills
• Vocational qualifications through the Pathways programme from Entry Level to Level 2 (see vocational pathway tab)

CANDI – Vocational Pathways

Performing Arts
Duration: 2 days per week over 36 weeks
Level: Foundation Learning – Level 1/2
Performance Points: 57-102 (not included in Key Stage 4 performance tables)

London is the UK’s Performing Arts hub, home to West End theatres, TV studios and more, all just a short tube ride away from our centres. Career areas include TV and film, radio and theatre in areas such as acting, dance, direction and choreography. This course is a work-related course with practical elements providing an introduction to the Performing Arts industry. 

At CANDI you will be surrounded by performance, music, theatre and drama at every turn, with the world of the performing arts on your doorstep. Whatever role you choose, whether it be behind the scenes or centre stage, we will equip you with the skills and attributes to kick start a career in this exciting industry.

You will benefit from being taught by teachers who have a wealth of knowledge and experience from working professionally in the field. We select plays, musicians and themes which draw on a wide range of international artists and practitioners to ensure the areas you study are dynamic, forward thinking and representative of our society. You will work with and learn from practitioners and experienced professionals on our dynamic courses.

Media
Duration: 2 days per week over 36 weeks
Level: Foundation Learning – Level 2

This course provides you with the opportunity to explore, develop and test your creativity within media, developing your base of skills and knowledge, while enhancing your self-confidence and revealing the potential career demands and opportunities within the sector.

You will be introduced to both the creative and technical aspects of creative media production, furthering your own personal development as you gain the skills, knowledge and understanding to progress to further education and employment within the creative industries.

The course has been designed to incorporate a strong element of vocational learning to provide you with the understanding, knowledge and skills necessary for future progression and employment, underpinned by transferable skills that will enable you to demonstrate qualities of adaptability, self-reliance, collaboration, dependability, resilience, imagination and creativity.

Art
Duration: 2 days per week over 36 weeks
Level: Level 1/2

The highest concentration of people working in the creative or cultural industry is in London, so we are perfectly located to help you begin your career. If you are interested in this exciting area. We offer fully-equipped studios for printmaking, painting, photography, fashion, textiles, computer graphics, mixed media design and sculpture. We have excellent links with many arts organisations, providing a wider range of work experience as well as a showcase for your work.

Many of our staff combine teaching with successful careers as practising artists, designers, fashion illustrators and photographers. This brings you valuable insight into the creative industry and contemporary themes.

CONEL (Enfield Centre)

GCSE Programme
Year 10 & Year 11
Duration: Full-time, 5 days per week over 36 weeks
Level: Entry Level – Level 2

This programme is designed to cater for disaffected learners, excluded learners or those not progressing well in traditional schooling. The course is truly personalised and integrates:

Access 2 Education
Year 10 or Year 11
Duration: Full-time, 5 days per week over 36 weeks
Level: Pre-Entry Level – Level 1
Performance Points: Based on Individual Learning Plan (not included in Key Stage 4 performance tables)

The Access 2 Education programme is designed for new entrants to the UK in Year 10 or Year 11, who have English as a second language and do not possess the language skills to enter mainstream education. The programme uses specially trained ESOL teachers to quickly develop the student’s English speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. Students will complete the ESOL Skills for Life Certificate at an appropriate level, depending on initial assessment, alongside developing maths and ICT skills. This course has very high progression rates into post-16 mainstream education.

Accelerate
Year 10 or Year 11
Duration: Full-time, 5 days per week over 36 weeks
Level: Entry Level 3 – Level 2
Performance Points: Based on Individual Learning Plan

Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy
Duration: 2 days per week over 36 weeks
Level: Foundation Learning – Level 1
Performance Points: 57-102 (not included in Key Stage 4 performance tables)

This Level 1 course is a work-related course with practical elements providing a basic understanding of the Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy industry. 

Construction
Duration: 2 days per week over 36 weeks
Level: Foundation Learning – Level 1

This practical course is an introduction to carpentry, painting, decorating and building techniques including brickwork. Students will work towards the Basic Skills 6219 (Brickwork, Painting and Decorating, Carpentry) Certificate, validated by City & Guilds, which includes a wide range of units that enable progression into the industry or further study.

Music Production
Duration: 2 days per week over 36 weeks
Level: Level 1

This programme is aimed at students wanting to pursue a career within the music industry. The Music Practitioners RSL Level 1 includes a wide range of theory-based and practical units, including music production, sound recording and song writing, enabling progression into the industry or post-16 study.

Sport
Duration: 2 days per week over 36 weeks
Level: Level 1

This programme is aimed at students wanting to pursue a career in sport, fitness or nutrition. The Skills for Sport and Active Leisure Level 1 Gateway Certificate offers a wide range of units, including short and long term exercise plans and healthy diet, enabling progression into the industry or post-16 study.
