Students from The College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London (CONEL) were invited to a Spotlight on Horror workshop in collaboration with The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC). The event, which took place on 23 November, gave students from Level 2 Music and Media courses the opportunity to learn about the classification of films in the horror genre.
The event started with an introduction to the BBFC which is an independent, non-governmental body that has classified cinema films since it was set up in 1912. Students were given insight into the classification process and its challenges.
Ian Mashiah, a compliance officer for the BBFC then led a workshop where he explained the reasoning behind various ratings of a range of films. Students were able to watch a range of vintage and contemporary clips and listen to a detailed analysis of each film’s rating. They also heard about factors that would cause a rating to be changed, such as viewer responses.
Nicholas Adesulure, a Level 2 Music Student, said: “I really enjoyed this trip, it has opened my eyes and given me a deep understanding as to why movies are given certain age ratings. We currently have an assignment on foley sounds for films and this trip has definitely given me loads of ideas on how to create horror foley sounds.”
Scarlett Squire, a teacher at CONEL, said “This trip was great for our students who want to understand how to create films for their projects. Understanding age ratings will help them create content for their correct target audiences. Students really enjoyed watching different clips and guessing the age ratings. Some were shocked to see that Hotel Transylvania was given a U rating!”
