Music Performance and Production students from CCC’s Holloway centre learn about how to manage payments for musical works with a masterclass from PRS for Music.
Students from Music Performance and Production courses at Capital City College (CCC) attended a Masterclass on Royalties hosted by royalties expert Kenny Barber from PRS for Music. PRS for Music is a world-leading management organisation which collects and pays royalties for its 175,000 members covering a repertoire of over 42 million musical works.
The event, which took place on 29 November at the college’s Holloway centre as part of the college’s Music Careers Week, was organised by Dan Partington, Lecturer in Music with the aim of providing students with a comprehensive understanding of royalties in the music industry.
During the masterclass, students learnt about the different types of royalties such as public performance royalties (PRS), mechanical royalties (MCPS), and PPL, which covers master recordings and neighbouring rights.
In addition to learning how royalties work, students also gained valuable insight into the world of copyright laws. By the end of the session, students had increased confidence in managing and maximising their music-related income.
Chelsea, who is a second year Music student, said: “I learned a lot from the session—it was incredibly insightful. One of the most valuable takeaways for me was understanding the complexities of royalty splits, especially in situations where an artist collaborates with a producer. It really helped me grasp how royalties are divided and how that impacts both artists and producers.”
At CCC, we use our strong industry connections to provide events such as the Masterclass on Royalties, where students can learn from experts about key business elements involved in pursuing a career in the UK music industry. Our industry-standard music suites and facilities give students the opportunity to develop their passion for music while gaining highly valued practical skills spanning production, performance and arrangement across multiple genres.
