Animal Care students get hands-on experience at Vauxhall City Farm

Animal Care Level 2 Diploma students spend time applying their knowledge and gaining practical skills at an education charity and urban farm, Vauxhall City Farm.

A group of Capital City College (CCC) students from the Animal Care – Level 2 Diploma course are currently taking part in a 12-week work experience Programme at Vauxhall City Farm.

Vauxhall City Farm is an education charity and urban farm based in central London. They offer a range of educational, horticultural and recreational workshops as well as volunteering opportunities and guided tours. Set within 1.5 acres and located close to Westminster, the farm is home to a range of animals including alpacas, goats, turkey, pigs and sheep as well as smaller animals such as chickens, guinea pigs and rabbits. The farm also includes an aviary, a duck pond and a cafe and welcomes around 60,000 visitors a year.

The students taking part in the current work experience programme are Shane Conway, Milan Corsial Paul, Reyhan Farinha Keser, and Joshua Corsial. While working at the farm, they will get involved with manual tasks such as cleaning out livestock and feeding a range of animals. The practical experience will enable students to apply what they have been learning on their course, particularly in relation to the Health & Safety at Work Act, The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) and The Animal Welfare Act.

In addition to enhancing their team working and communication skills, the students will also be able to deepen their sense of independence and show initiative in a working environment. The work experience programme at Vauxhall City Farm will count towards the students’ course requirements as all students on the Animal Care – Level 2 Diploma are required to carry out 75 hours of work experience. After completing each work experience session, the students will be able to reflect on their animal care skills and abilities and use their experience to inform various aspects of their learning.

At CCC, all students on full-time study programmes complete a work experience placement within the relevant sector. We work with a range of work experience providers to give students the opportunity to apply and enhance their skills and help them gain valuable experience working within their chosen industry.
