A group of students from Capital City College (CCC) visited Brunel University of London to find out more about pathways to policing and gain insight into the life of a police officer.

The visit, which took place on 15 February, involved 20 adult learners from the Access to Higher Education Diploma in Policing and was the result of a joint venture between Metropolitan Police, Brunel University and Capital City College. The event was designed to inform, inspire and motivate students considering their next step towards a career in policing.

The event began with a detailed and engaging presentation on Police Constable Degree Apprenticeships which offered students plenty of information about the apprenticeship pathway. This was followed by an informative Q&A session where students were able to put their questions to active police professionals. The students then took part in a practical role play exercise, during which they were able to expand their skills and experience. Finally, students had the opportunity to step into the shoes of a police officer by trying on a selection of police uniform and equipment.

The Access to Higher Education Diploma in Policing at CCC has been developed in collaboration with the Metropolitan Police Service who are actively working to remove barriers to entering the service. The course provides students from diverse backgrounds across London with a range of pathways into policing programmes such as the Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship.

Charlotte Taylor, one of the Access to Higher Education Diploma in Policing students who took part in the visit, said: “When they came in and did their presentation it reminded me why I’m working so hard to become a police officer. It was inspiring and excited me into what my future holds.”

Aoife Allen, also a student on the course, said: “The Brunel speakers were so helpful and really informative. They answered any questions I had and actually convinced me to go down the degree route!”

Our range of Access to Higher Education courses helps students from a range of backgrounds to gain the knowledge and experience needed to progress in their subject area.
