ABOUT THE COURSE

Brand new course for 2024/25

The 3D Applied Design/Architecture course under the Creative Practice UAL Level 3 specification offers an immersive and innovative journey into the realms of design, architecture, and spatial creativity. This program is tailored for individuals with a passion for shaping environments and structures through a combination of artistic vision and technical expertise.

The curriculum delves into the core principles of design thinking, spatial dynamics, and architectural concepts, empowering students to explore the interplay between form, function, and aesthetics. Through a hands-on approach, students engage in a diverse range of projects and modules that cultivate their skills in 3D modelling, prototyping, and spatial design.

The program encourages experimentation and pushes the boundaries of conventional design by integrating cutting-edge technology and traditional craftsmanship. Students explore various design software, fabrication techniques, and materials, allowing them to bring their creative visions to life in tangible forms.

One of the hallmarks of this course is its emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration. Students work across disciplines, collaborating with peers from diverse backgrounds such as interior design, product design, and architecture. This fosters a rich learning environment where different perspectives converge, sparking innovation and broadening the scope of design possibilities.

Extended Diplomas have two one-year programmes. You need to finish the first year before moving on to the second.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

Year 1: Foundation and Fundamental Concepts

Introduction to Design Principles: Students start by exploring foundational design principles, spatial dynamics, and architectural concepts. They delve into 2D and 3D design fundamentals, learning about form, function, and design theory.

Digital Tools and Techniques: Emphasis on acquiring skills in design software, 3D modelling, and digital visualisation tools. Students learn to translate their ideas into digital representations and explore the potential of digital fabrication methods.

Materials and Construction: Understanding materials, their properties, and construction techniques essential in the realm of design and architecture. This includes hands-on experiences with different materials and prototyping methods.

Contextual Studies: Introduction to contextual studies covering architectural history, cultural influences, and societal impacts on design. This provides a broader understanding of design's role in various contexts.

Year 2: Specialisation and Advanced Projects

Advanced Design Studios: Students progress into more specialised design studios focusing on specific areas within 3D applied design or architecture. These studios often involve complex projects allowing students to apply their skills to real-world scenarios.

Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Further exploration into interdisciplinary collaboration, engaging with peers from different design disciplines. This encourages a holistic approach to design and fosters innovative thinking.

Professional Practice and Industry Engagements: Modules dedicated to understanding professional practices in design/architecture, including client briefs, project management, and industry standards. Industry collaborations, internships, or live projects may also be part of this phase.

Final Projects and Portfolio Development: Culmination of the course with a major individual or group project, often accompanied by a comprehensive portfolio showcasing the students' journey, growth, and best work throughout the program.

This structured breakdown over two years ensures a progressive learning trajectory, building a strong foundation in the initial year and enabling students to specialise, apply advanced skills, and prepare for professional roles in the dynamic field of 3D applied design and architecture by the end of the program.

WHAT WILL I NEED?

You will need:

  • Four GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English Language or Maths or an equivalent Level 2 qualification at Merit (and Functional Skills in English at Level 2/GCSE English Language at grade 4 or above)
  • A portfolio of your art and design work

All applicants must have an interview to confirm that the course is suitable for them.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

The assessment methods for the 3D Applied Design/Architecture course under the Creative Practice UAL Level 3 specification are diverse and comprehensive, designed to evaluate theoretical knowledge, practical skills, creativity, and critical thinking abilities across various dimensions of design and architecture.

If you will be aged 16, 17 or 18 on 31st August prior to the start date of your course and you have the legal right to remain in the UK for the duration of your programme then your study with us will be free. Please see here for the documents you will need to show us.

Adults - Level 3

If you will be aged 19 to 23 prior to the start date of your course, and do not already have a full Level 3 qualification, you may be eligible for a Level 3 entitlement, in which case your study with us will be free. If you are older, or already have a Level 3, we have many other Level 3 courses that are also free to study. Otherwise, you will have to pay the fees yourself or apply for an Advanced Learner Loan.

MEET SOME OF THE TEACHERS

Rachel James

Rachel teaches 3D Art and Design and Level 2 and 3 Art and Design courses in the well-equipped 3D workshop at Kings Cross. Rachel completed a Fine Art Degree at Cardiff Uni in the 90's specialising in sculpture.

Rachel went on to work within the creative industries across events, film, theatre, and TV. Later she started her inflatable design company; notably creating interactive breathing window displays for Harvey Nichols and Selfridges, the butterfly tunnel at London Zoo and her art installations.

She got into teaching by facilitating various workshops during artist residencies and visiting lecturer posts going on to complete an MA in Art and Design in Education at the Institute of Education London in 2013, Rachel achieved her PGCE in 2019.

She currently creates jewellery alongside teaching and brings her wealth of experience and creative passion to the classroom to engage students in experimental ways of working with a variety of sources and materials - including inflatables from time to time! Rachel enjoys helping build students’ portfolios with interior design and architectural models, product designs, public art, lighting and more.
