Capital City College (CCC)’s Tottenham campus has concluded a successful two-week programme of student engagement combining a major Careers and Innovation Fair with a dedicated Higher Education Week.

These two events gave students a real insight into industry opportunities and routes into higher education, helping them make informed and ambitious decisions about their next steps.

The Careers and Innovation Fair, run in partnership with the Mayor’s Green Skills Academy, attracted a lot of interest, welcoming over 100 members of the public in the morning and more than 200 students in the afternoon. Employers including Mace Group, Islington Council, The Hill Group, Keltbray, SISK, Glencar, Verity Healthcare, NSSL and the Royal Fleet Auxiliary showcased opportunities across construction, engineering, health, public services and defence.

Representatives from these organisations offered students detailed insight into a range of roles available in the construction, engineering, public services, health and defence sectors. Many employers also spoke to students about apprenticeship pathways, in-demand skills that future employers look for, and qualifications required for progression within their sectors.

Student response was overwhelmingly positive, and many took the chance to ask questions and gather information to consider how their qualifications can translate into future roles.

One Electrical Installations student described the day as transformative, saying: “This was so great. The companies were relevant and clear on how to apply, and most of the jobs had something to do with my skills. I now have a clear direction for my career.”

The Careers and Innovation Fair set the stage for the following week’s activity – a dedicated Higher Education Week aimed at helping learners understand the full range of university options available to them. Over three days, the campus welcomed representatives from Brunel University of London, St George’s University of London, the University of Brighton, the University of West London, the University of Hull, Canterbury Christ Church University, Staffordshire University and Swansea University.

The programme was carefully designed to support BTEC Level 3 and Access to HE learners who are actively preparing for higher education applications, while also providing early exposure to ESOL and Level 1 and 2 students who are beginning to consider their long-term progression. In total, 177 students met and spoke to university staff, asking questions about courses, entry requirements and future career opportunities.

In addition to engaging students in discussions at their stand, the University of Hull delivered an in-person class for BTEC and T Level Engineering students. This session explored career opportunities within the engineering sector and included a taster lecture demonstrating the range of specialisms available at degree level.

Together, the Careers and Innovation Fair and Higher Education Week offered a structured and purposeful progression journey for students, helping them plan for their next steps, whether in higher education or the workplace. For students at Tottenham, the recent programme has allowed them to see tangible routes into both professional and academic futures that they can strive to achieve.

The fair firstly introduced students to live labour-market demand and helped them understand the qualifications needed for entering skilled employment. Higher Education Week then enabled students to explore how studying at degree level can also lead to employment pathways, allowing students to make well-informed, aspirational decisions with confidence.

The two-week programme reflected the strength of Capital City College’s partnerships with employers, universities and the Mayor’s Green Skills Academy, collaborations which ensure that students continue to receive real-world opportunities and the space to make well-thought-out choices about their future careers.

Philippa Cooke, Enterprise, Employability and Careers Manager, said the energy from students across the two events was particularly inspiring. “This two-week programme showed what is possible when students are given clear, engaging opportunities to explore their future,” she said. “The enthusiasm from learners was evident throughout, and it was inspiring to see them making links between industry, university and their own ambitions.”
