ABOUT THE COURSE

A Level Spanish builds upon your existing knowledge gained at GCSE, giving you a sound understanding of using your language in a variety of contexts and situations - at home, abroad, with friends or in the workplace. Spanish is the second most widely-spoken language in the world and one of the most widely-understood languages in Europe, with over 400 million speakers; studying A Level Spanish can provide you with the speaking, listening and understand skills to continue your studies in Spanish at university, as well as equipping you to work and travel in Europe, Central and South America, and other Spanish-speaking countries.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

Speaking - You will be able to communicate with over 400 million people across the world

Listening - You will be able to understand spoken Spanish, as well as watch Spanish films and TV shows, and listen to podcasts and music

Reading - You will be able to read Spanish books, newsletters and magazines, as well as alerts and notices

Writing - You will be able to write in many different styles, for different audiences, using the most appropriate styles

WHAT WILL I NEED?

You will need:

  • Three GCSEs at grade 5 or above, including English Language, plus two further GCSEs at grade 4, including Maths
  • GCSE Spanish at grade 6 or higher
  • A reference from your previous school/college

All applicants must have an interview to confirm that A Levels are suitable for them

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

During the 1st year there will be 5 formal internal assessments which you will need to pass in order to progress into the 2nd year. At the end of the 2nd year there are three public examinations, one of which is an oral exam.

WHAT WILL IT COST?

School Leavers

If you will be aged 16, 17 or 18 on 31 August in the year you begin your course, and have been resident in the UK/EU/EEA for the past 3 years, it will be free. Some courses will have other costs associated, such as for materials and trips.
