ABOUT THE COURSE

A Level Photography will help you develop a sense of what makes an effective image and understand the historical development of the photograph, its impact on society and our understanding of ourselves. You will research and write coherent analyses, demonstrating consideration and imagination in your own work.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

Topics covered can include:

  • Photographing people
  • Photographing places
  • Still-life photography
  • Documentary photography
  • Photojournalism
  • Experimental imagery
  • Photographic installation
  • Fashion photography
  • Digital imaging

WHAT WILL I NEED?

You will need:

  • Three GCSEs at grade 5 or above, including English Language, plus two further GCSEs at grade 4 including Maths
  • Grade 4 or above in GCSE Art and Design, or a related subject*
  • A reference from your previous school/college

*If you did not study GCSE Art and Design, or a related subject, we will assess your suitability based on a portfolio of work. For help and advice on building your portfolio of work, please click here.

All applicants must have an interview to confirm that A Levels are suitable for them.

Please be aware that as this subject includes a portfolio, as well as a public exam set by the exam board, you will only be permitted to have a choice of one other subject which includes coursework. Your third subject choice must be an exam-only assessed subject. For example, you would not be permitted to take Photography, History and Media, as these all include coursework.

When applying for an A Level programme at Westminster Kingsway, please refer to the general entry requirements on our A Level Courses page as well as the subject-specific details listed above.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

Assessment takes place regularly on the course to provide feedback to develop your visual artwork and written components. The course contains two assessed component - a personal investigation portfolio and an externally set assignment.
