ABOUT THE COURSE

This course is the Foundation Diploma in Engineering and forms the first Year of the Extended Diploma. The course covers a wide variety of Engineering areas and provides a pathway to a wide range of University courses and careers, with particular focus on Robotics in Engineering.

On this course you will:

  • Develop your research skills
  • Advance your technical knowledge
  • Design and create your own solutions to everyday engineering problems
  • Develop your mathematical skills

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

This course consists of two separate qualifications. In your first year of study, you will work towards the Level 3 Foundation Diploma. Following successful completion of this qualification, you will be able to progress to the Extended Diploma. Our Extended Diplomas offer equivalent UCAS points to studying 3 A Levels.

Year One (Foundation Diploma)

  • Engineering Principles
  • Delivery of Engineering Process Safely as a Team
  • Engineering Product Design and Manufacture
  • Applied Commercial and Quality Principles in Engineering
  • Electronic Circuits and Devices
  • Static Mechanical Principles 
  • Calculus to Solve Engineering Problems

Year Two (Extended Diploma)

  • A Specialist Engineering Product
  • Computer Aided Design in Engineering
  • Indsutrial Robotics 
  • Electronic Measurement and Testing of Circuits
  • Microcontroller Systems for Engineers
  • Dynamic Mechanical Principles
  • Thermodynamic Principles and Practice 
  • Further Engineering Mathematics

WHAT WILL I NEED?

You will need:

  • Five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English Language, Maths and Science or an equivalent Level 2 qualification, such as Engineering or Science, at Merit together with GCSE Maths Grade 4 or above
  • A reference from your previous school/college

All applicants must have an initial assessment and interview to confirm that the course is suitable for them.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

The course is assessed throughout the year with practical assignments, tasks and written exams. The tasks and exams are set and marked by Pearson, and allow you to demonstrate your confidence in recalling and applying technical information and fundamental knowledge, as well as your application of knowledge and skills.

WHAT WILL IT COST?

Aged 16-18
