A Level students from the college’s Sixth Form centre have shown off their skills and achieved success in two different maths competitions.
Students from Capital City College’s (CCC) Sixth Form have demonstrated their excellent mathematics abilities in a series of national competitions.
A group of 26 students from Year 12 and Year 13 A Level Courses took part in the UK Maths Trust (UKMT) senior competitions. Their successful performance led to one student receiving a gold certificate, nine students taking home a silver certificate, and ten students being awarded bronze certificates.
After demonstrating their knowledge in the UKMT competitions, six Year 12 students and two Year 13 students were invited to take part in a more advanced challenge, the Andrew Jobbings Senior Kangaroo. The competition was named after a former UKMT representative and contributor Andrew Jobbings, and the name “Kangaroo” acknowledges the contribution made by Australia to establishing large-scale mathematics contests.
The Andrew Jobbing Senior Kangaroo, which took place on 19 November, was a 20 question integer answer challenge with a time limit of 60 minutes. The eight Sixth Form students worked hard to answer the high-level questions and Year 12 student Amena Islam Shakera did especially well, receiving a Bronze Kangaroo Award for her achievement in the competition.
The students’ participation, performance and achievement in both maths competitions is a positive reflection of their enthusiasm for their subject and their willingness to take part in open academic challenges. In addition to their studies, a number of the Sixth Form students are members of the college’s Problem Solving Club, UKMT Club and STEP Club.
The Mathematics – A Level course at CCC is a rigorous maths course that builds upon GCSE Mathematics, supporting students as they develop their algebra and creative problem-solving skills to gain a deeper understanding of the beauty and breadth of mathematics.
Students build their analytic tools and abilities which can then be applied in a wide variety of fields such as science, economics and computing.
