About

This qualification is offered at Capital City College for those interested in developing a career in animal care or veterinary nursing, with a focus on work within a veterinary practice.

Full funding may be available, subject to previous qualifications.

Lantra's new qualification is accredited by Ofqual and Qualifications Wales.

Requirements

There are no formal academic entry requirements for this qualification, but you'll need prior experience of caring for animals.

You should be employed for 30 hours or more per week in a veterinary practice, caring for cats, dogs and rabbits and be able to attend one scheduled day at college every 4 - 6 weeks.

Your veterinary practice does not need to be an RCVS training practice.

You can also gain additional experience through short-term placements, visits to work premises, and attending sector conferences.

Please note: If you will be completing this qualification as part of an apprenticeship, you will also need:

  • To achieve Level 1 English and Maths
  • To take a test for Level 2 English and Maths before taking your end-point assessment

A Level 2 Functional Skills in Maths and English can be offered alongside this award if required for entry onto the Level 3 Diploma in Veterinary Nursing.

Further Information

Anyone aged 16+ who meets the prerequisites and has an existing role or keen interest in working with cats, dogs and rabbits. You will already be working within a veterinary practice. Achieving this qualification will enable you to progress your career within an animal-based business or veterinary practice.

Level 2 Award in Safe Use of Veterinary Medicines Level 3 Work Based Diploma in Veterinary Nursing - Small Animal Level 3 Work Based Diploma in Veterinary Nursing - Equine Level 4 Award as a Suitably Qualified Person

Training

By the end of this qualification, you will have gained knowledge and skills in the veterinary care and welfare of small animal species.

As you progress through the qualification, your knowledge, understanding and skills will be assessed in:

  • Animal accommodation and safe working practices
  • Animal behaviour, health and welfare
  • Animal feeding and nutrition
  • Provision of veterinary medicine
  • Communication and teamwork
  • Animal biology (theory only) for small animal species

For the Veterinary Care Support pathway, the qualification will also assess your knowledge, understanding, and skills in medical and surgical nursing care and diagnostic techniques.
