ABOUT

This Level 1 BTEC Land-based Studies course is a two-year vocational programme designed for learners with EHCPs who benefit from a structured, practical, and supportive learning environment.

Delivered through the Supported Learning department, the course introduces students to a range of land-based sectors including animal care, horticulture, and land management.

This course is ideal if you enjoy hands-on, outdoor learning and want to develop life, work, and personal development skills in a green environment.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

You will build practical skills and knowledge in areas such as plant care, animal feeding, soil preparation, and workshop safety, while also developing transferable skills like teamwork, organisation, and future planning.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

This course is open to learners aged 16–25 who have an EHCP. There are no formal qualifications required for entry, just an interest in nature, animals, and practical outdoor learning, and a willingness to engage in group activities and hands-on tasks.

COURSEWORK REQUIREMENTS

Assessment is based entirely on coursework and practical observation, with no formal exams. You will complete a portfolio of evidence throughout both years, including:

  • Practical work logs
  • Visual evidence (photos/videos of tasks)
  • Tutor observations
  • Research and written activities
  • Reflections and feedback
  • Group task evaluations

Assessment is tailored to suit individual learning styles and communication methods.

FEES

AGED 16 - 24 with an Education, Health and Care Plan

There are no fees for learner aged 16 to 24 who have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).

PROGRESSION

Upon completing the course, learners may progress to:

  • Level 2 programmes in Animal Care, Horticulture, or similar subjects
  • Supported internships in parks, farms, or environmental services
  • Volunteering or employment in land-based settings
  • Independence-focused progression routes involving life skills and employability
