ABOUT THE COURSE

This course will help you develop the necessary skills, experience and techniques for you to become a qualified hairdresser. 

You will learn practical skills for a range of salon activities, from conducting client consultations to cutting and dressing hair. The course will explore how different shampoos and conditioners affect the hair and scalp, and you will study a variety of colouring and lightening products and techniques.

You will learn how to work in accordance with health and safety procedures to ensure the well-being of your clients, your colleagues, and yourself. As well as working in the college's own hairdressing salon, you will also have the opportunity to do a period of work experience. You will also work on improving your English and Maths skills.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

Topics covered can include:

  • Promoting additional services or products to clients
  • Providing hairdressing consultation services
  • Cutting hair using basic techniques
  • Colouring hair using a variety of techniques
  • Styling and dressing hair
  • Perming hair
  • Shampooing and conditioning hair
  • Creating an image based on a theme
  • Working with colleagues within beauty-related industries
  • Health and Safety

WHAT WILL I NEED?

You will need:

  • Functional Skills at Entry Level 3 or above in English or Maths, or equivalent

All applicants must have an interview and assessment to confirm that the course is suitable for them.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

You will be assessed through a portfolio of evidence, collected from written assessments, presentations, witness statements and practice observation.

WHAT WILL IT COST?

School Leavers

If you will be aged 16, 17 or 18 on 31 August in the year you begin your course, and have been resident in the UK/EU/EEA for the past 3 years, it will be free. Some courses will have other costs associated, such as for materials and trips. Adults

Entry Level, Level 1, Level 2
If you will be aged 19 or older on 31 August in the year you begin your course, and have been resident in the UK/EU/EEA for the past 3 years, your course may be free, depending on your circumstances. Some courses will have other costs associated, such as for materials and trips. WHAT CAN I DO AFTER?

Although the progression route to Level 3 is not automatic, following successful completion of this course you may progress onto:

  • Apprenticeships
  • Level 2 Hairdressing
  • Level 3 Hairdressing
  • Employment - You may go straight into employment as a junior stylist

The course also provides skills transferable to other subject areas such as Beauty Therapy, Nail Technology and Barbering.
