ABOUT THE COURSE

The Pearson BTEC Level 1/Level 2 First Extended Certificate in Applied Science has been designed primarily for young people aged 14–19 who may wish to explore a vocational route throughout Key Stage 4. It provides an engaging, robust, broad-based introduction to applied science principles. The underpinning knowledge, understanding, and practical skills that make up this qualification reflect the needs of
employers and higher and further education professionals. It presents knowledge, skills, and understanding in a meaningful work-related context, allowing learners to understand theory and application.

The course comprises eight mandatory units that underpin the knowledge and skills that are key to progression within science-based industries. These mandatory units cover the range of essential scientific principles together with underlying introductions to essential knowledge and applications in biology, chemistry, and physics. English and mathematics have been contextualized within the assessment aims. This allows
learners to practice these essential skills in naturally occurring and meaningful contexts, where appropriate.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

Topics covered can include:

  • Chemistry and our Earth
  • Energy and our Universe
  • Biology and our Environment
  • Human Behaviour

WHAT WILL I NEED?

You will need:

  • Four GCSEs at grade 3 or above, including English Language, Maths, and Science or a Level 1 Diploma in Science, with Functional Skills in Maths and English at Level 1
  • A reference from your previous school/college
  • All applicants must have an interview and assessment to confirm that the course is suitable for them.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

This qualification includes two externally assessed units (by the examination board) that deal with science principles and scientific skills.; all the other units are asssessed internally.  The approach for the internally assessed units provides opportunities to explore beyond these principles into vocationally linked activities and enables learners to receive feedback on their progress throughout the course as they provide evidence towards meeting the unit assessment criteria.

WHAT WILL IT COST?

MEET SOME OF THE TEACHERS

Minas Mina

Minas earned a BSc degree in Physics and Physiology from the University of London, followed by a PhD in Physiology, focusing on cystic fibrosis and studying the impact of plasma on digestive system ion movement. He presented his research at various scientific conferences.

For four years, Minas conducted postdoctoral research at Imperial College London, exploring tiny electric currents across cells and hormone effects. Additionally, he obtained an MSc in Medical Diagnostics from the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, emphasising modern scientific and diagnostic techniques with an ethical perspective. In 2010, he earned a PGCE from Greenwich University.

For over 40 years, Minas taught Science and Mathematics at GCSE and A Level in schools, colleges, and privately, including university students, even teaching a princess. For 7-8 years, he worked at the Open University Summer School, serving as a demonstrator and tutor, assisting students in Biochemistry and Physiology. Minas now teaches at CONEL, where he regularly takes students to university laboratories for experiments. Outside academia, Minas is active in social, political, and humanitarian affairs, engaging with political leaders in the UK, Parliament, FCO, and abroad.

Kwame Omari

Kwame holds a BSc Honours degree in Biology (University of Cape Coast, Ghana, 1981), a Diploma in Education (University of Cape Coast, Ghana, 1981), a PGCE from Greenwich University (2005), and an MSc in Environmental Science Chemistry (University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, 1992).

With over 20 years of teaching experience in FE colleges covering GCSE mathematics and science, A Level in Science, and Vocational courses, Kwame holds extensive knowledge in these subjects.

Kwame has also actively participated in scientific seminars, gained a certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (2012), and regular excursions with college students to university laboratories, while concurrently carrying out pastoral duties as a learning manager.

Towhid Alam

Towhid completed an MSc from one of the renowned universities in the United Kingdom. They worked with postgraduate students for several years in the universities for their projects and advised and guided a scientific team in the research-based industry to complete projects funded by the EU.
