ABOUT THE COURSE

A Level Graphic Communication will introduce you to a variety of experiences, exploring graphic communication media, processes and techniques, both traditional and new media. You will look at images and artefacts relating to a range of art, craft and design, from the past to recent times, including examples from across the world. The course will develop your knowledge and understanding of how ideas, feelings and meanings can be conveyed and interpreted, looking at the intended audience and purpose of a work.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

Topics covered can include:

  • Drawing
  • Mark-making
  • Print making
  • Typography
  • Illustration
  • Photography
  • Digital design
  • Animation

You will also develop a critical understanding of contextual sources that support and develop your designs.

WHAT WILL I NEED?

You will need:

  • Three GCSEs at grade 5 or above, including English Language, plus two further GCSEs at grade 4 including Maths
  • Grade 4 or above in GCSE Art and Design, or a related subject*
  • A reference from your previous school/college

*If you did not study GCSE Art and Design, or a related subject, we will assess your suitability based on a portfolio of work. For help and advice on building your portfolio of work, please click here.

All applicants must have an interview to confirm that A Levels are suitable for them.

Please be aware that as this subject includes creating a portfolio, as well as an externally set assignment, you will only be permitted to have a choice of one other subject which includes coursework. Your third subject choice must be an exam-only assessed subject. For example, you would not be permitted to take Graphic Communication, History and Media as these all include coursework, a portfolio or assignment.

When applying for an A Level programme at Westminster Kingsway, please refer to the general entry requirements on our A Level Courses page as well as the subject-specific details listed above.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

Assessment takes place regularly on the course to provide feedback to develop your visual artwork and written components (through one-to-one support and group critiques of work). The course contains two assessed components - a personal investigation portfolio (60%) and an externally set assignment (40%).

WHAT WILL IT COST?

Aged 16-18

If you will be aged 16, 17 or 18 on 31st August prior to the start date of your course and you have the legal right to remain in the UK for the duration of your programme then your study with us will be free. Please see here for the documents you will need to show us.

Some courses will have other associated costs, such as for specialist materials and trips. Many of our students are eligible for financial support, see here for details.

WHAT CAN I DO AFTER?

A Levels are widely regarded as the standard entry qualification for top universities in the UK, and the rest of the world. Many of our students go on to study for a degree at the university of their choice, with some choosing to progress into apprenticeships or other employment.
