ABOUT

Creative Media Production and Technology: Photography and Visual Communication - Level 3 Extended Diploma (UAL)

This course is accredited by the University of the Arts London (UAL).

This dynamic and hands-on course is designed for aspiring image-makers, storytellers, and visual thinkers who want to explore the power of photography and visual communication in today’s media landscape. Delivered under the UAL Level 3 Creative Media Production & Technology specification, this pathway provides a strong foundation in both traditional and contemporary photographic practices.

You will develop technical and conceptual skills across studio photography, location shooting, digital editing, and visual storytelling — while exploring how images communicate messages, shape narratives, and influence audiences. The course encourages experimentation with a range of processes and formats, including documentary, portrait, editorial, and conceptual photography.

Through a series of practical projects, you’ll learn how to research, plan, produce and evaluate visual content while building a professional portfolio that showcases your creative identity. You will also gain an understanding of layout, composition, typography and branding in visual communication, preparing you for progression into higher education or a creative career.

Whether you want to work in photography, design, advertising, publishing or social media, this course will give you the creative confidence, industry insight and technical fluency to succeed.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

This course blends creative experimentation with technical skill-building to help you become a confident visual communicator. You'll explore a wide range of photographic practices while learning how to develop and communicate ideas effectively through images, layouts and design.

  • Introduction to Media Processes and Technical Skills: Learn how to use digital and DSLR cameras, lighting setups, and post-production tools like Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom. Develop essential image-making and file-management skills.
  • Introduction to Design and Research Skills: Explore visual language, composition, and the use of photography in design, branding, and communication. Begin to analyse and respond to briefs through independent research and mood boards.
  • Responding to a Media Brief: Apply your skills in a focused project — such as a visual campaign, editorial spread or photographic narrative — showing how you interpret and communicate messages visually.
  • Exploring Audio-Visual Production and Technology: Extend your storytelling through moving image, sound, or image sequences — exploring multimedia approaches to photographic communication.
  • Exploring and Developing Creative Media Skills: Experiment with visual styles, photographic genres and image manipulation. Develop a personal creative voice and strengthen your technical fluency.
  • Personal Progression: Reflect on your future goals, build a creative CV or digital portfolio, and explore higher education and industry options related to photography, media and design.
  • Producing a Personal Project: Design and produce an original, self-directed photographic project — such as a zine, exhibition series or campaign — that showcases your interests and communication skills.
