ABOUT THE COURSE

This course has been designed to help you specialise in health and social care, covering a variety of topics including public health, sociological and psychological perspectives, and safeguarding. You will also go on work placement to experience working in a health and social care setting.

The course is studied on-site at the Camden Road campus. This course is the vocational aspect of a year-long study programme. You will study various components in this study programme. These will include either GCSE maths or English, work placement and various enrichment activities. Your personal tutor will support you throughout the course and our work placement officer will work with you to secure a placement that suits your career choices. We work in partnership with most London Hospitals and care settings, so you will access opportunities that will enable you to progress and aim high. Successful completion of this course leads to enrolment on to the extended diploma in health and social care.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

This course consists of two separate qualifications. In your first year of study, you will work towards the Level 3 90-Credit Foundation Diploma. Following successful completion of this qualification, you will be able to progress to the Extended Diploma. Our Extended Diplomas offer equivalent UCAS points to studying 3 A Levels.

You will study a combination of theory, applied theory and practical topics across a broad range of subjects. Topics covered can include:

WHAT WILL I NEED?

You will need:

  • Four GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including GCSE English Language or Maths, and GCSE Science (Core Science or Biology) at grade 4 or above) or an equivalent Level 2 qualification at Merit or above
  • An Enhanced DBS check
  • To have completed some work experience, ideally within a people-facing role or care setting

All applicants must have an interview and assessment to confirm that the course is suitable for them.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

The course is assessed through a combination of coursework activities, theoretical and practical assignments, assessment tests, exams and case studies. There are two externally assessed units. All units are assessed and graded and an overall grade for the qualification is awarded.

If you will be aged 16, 17 or 18 on 31st August prior to the start date of your course and you have the legal right to remain in the UK for the duration of your programme then your study with us will be free. Please see here for the documents you will need to show us.

WHAT CAN I DO AFTER?

This course will help you to move on to higher level courses, such as a Bachelor of Science, an apprenticeship, or to pursue employment in the health and social care industry. Example career paths include Psychology, Youth Work, Social Work, Nursing, Midwifery and Health Studies.

MEET SOME OF THE TEACHERS

Julie Golding

Julie’s journey has been shaped by a strong commitment to learning, teaching, and making a positive impact in the health and social care sector. Her role as a qualified counsellor allows her to provide a safe and non-judgmental space for clients to explore their thoughts, feelings, and challenges. Julie strongly believes in the importance of mental health awareness, which prompted her to become a Mental Health First Aider Instructor in April 2021.

In March 2019, Julie achieved a Level 4 IQA Internal Quality Assurance. Her journey has been characterised by adaptability and innovation. From October 2014 to July 2015, Julie served as an Interim Curriculum Lead and Health and Social Care Lecturer at the College of Northwest London. This experience showcased her ability to take on leadership responsibilities while remaining committed to student development.

Julie achieved a BA (Hons) degree in Housing Management and Development at Westminster University in 2007 as well as a PGCE at Canterbury Christ Church University in 2014.

Julie began her career at City and Islington College in October 2018, as a Health and Social Care Lecturer nurturing the talents of diverse students and guiding them towards successful careers. 


Elithia Yekeye

Elithia is a dedicated and accomplished educator with a diverse background that uniquely equips them for their role as a teacher at City and Islington College. Elithia holds a BSc Honors in Economics and a BSc Honors in Health and Social Care and understands the complexities of economic systems and the nuances of healthcare and social services.

Elithia’s journey into education took a purposeful turn when they achieved a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) in Health and Social Care. This deliberate choice reflects Elithia’s passion for imparting knowledge and nurturing future professionals in the field. Prior to their teaching career, Elithia garnered valuable insights from the banking and care sectors, which enriched them to teach with real-world perspectives.

Elithia’s teaching career spans back to 2007 specialising in Health and Social Care both theoretical foundations and practical applications which is instrumental in fostering the growth of students pursuing Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications in Health and Social Care.

Before joining CANDI, Elithia worked at Harrow and East Buckshire Colleges and has vast experience in various educational settings and honed their adaptability and effectiveness as an educator, enabling them to cater to a diverse range of learning styles and needs.

Elithia’s dynamic teaching style, coupled with a rich professional background bridges the gap between academic knowledge and real-world practices. Their commitment to empowering students with comprehensive insights makes them an invaluable asset to City and Islington College as they continue to shape the next generation of professionals.


Esther Koroma

Esther was with City and Islington College from 2011-2016 and rejoined in September 2022. Esther successfully obtained a BSc (Hons) in Psychology from the University of East London, an MA in Development and Emergency Practice (Human Rights) at Oxford Brookes University and a PGCE/DTLLS at the University of Greenwich.

Esther has a decade of experience in teaching 16+ age groups and has taught a range of courses on BTEC, CACHE, OCR, and Gateway curriculum.  Esther contributes to enhancing learners' critical thinking skills and has achieved increases in achievement and success rates.  Esther finds the concepts studied in the MA in Development and Emergency Practice which includes human right to education; adequate housing, civil society, and social media platform; environment and disaster; and research invaluable learning insights for teaching and delivery. 

Esther has industry experience as a volunteer in assisting and helping vulnerable adults and people living with dementia in residential homes and those with mental health conditions in communities. Other interests of Esther include fundraising, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), advocacy in the alleviation of poverty, democracy, and world affairs.
