ABOUT THE COURSE

Further Maths is a challenging qualification, which both extends and deepens your knowledge and understanding beyond the standard A Level Mathematics. If you enjoy mathematics, it provides a challenge and a chance to explore new and more sophisticated mathematical concepts. You will also study further applications of mathematics in mechanics, statistics and decision mathematics.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

Topics covered can include:

  • Algebra 
  • Geometry 
  • Trigonometry 
  • Calculus 
  • Complex numbers
  • Matrices 
  • Proof 
  • Hyperbolic functions
  • Polar coordinates 
  • Differential equations

WHAT WILL I NEED?

You will need:

  • GCSE Maths at grade 7 or above
  • GCSE English Lanugage at grade 5 or above
  • GCSE Science at grade 55 or above
  • One further GCSE at grade 4 or above
  • All students enrolled for A-level Further Mathematics must be enrolled on A-level Mathematics as one of their choices
  • A reference from your previous school/college

All applicants must have an interview to confirm that A Levels are suitable for them.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

During the 1st year there will be 5 formal internal assessments which you will need to pass in order to progress into the 2nd year. At the end of the 2nd year there are three public examinations.

WHAT WILL IT COST?

School Leavers

If you will be aged 16, 17 or 18 on 31 August in the year you begin your course, and have been resident in the UK/EU/EEA for the past 3 years, it will be free. Some courses will have other costs associated, such as for materials and trips. WHAT CAN I DO AFTER?

If you are planning to study for a degree in areas such as as Engineering, Science, Computing, Finance, Economics, or perhaps Mathematics itself, you will benefit enormously from taking Further Mathematics, as it introduces new topics such as matrices and complex numbers that are vital in many of these degrees.
