ABOUT THE COURSE

Welcome to the vibrant world of fashion and textiles at WestKing! Our dynamic and innovative course is designed to ignite your passion for creativity and style. If you have a keen interest in the ever-evolving realm of fashion, this is the perfect opportunity to embark on an exciting journey.

In this course, you'll explore the fundamental principles of design, textiles, and garment construction. Our experienced team, comprised of dual professionals with industry experience and seasoned educators, will guide you through hands-on projects, allowing you to develop a strong foundation in both the art and science of fashion. From sketching your first design to bringing it to life through fabric selection and sewing techniques, you'll gain practical skills that are essential in the competitive world of fashion.

This course is accredited by UAL.

Extended Diplomas have two one-year programmes. You need to finish the first year before moving on to the second.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

This course consists of two separate qualifications.

In your first year of study, you will complete the Diploma, then progress on to complete the Extended Diploma in year 2.  The Extended Diploma offers equivalent UCAS points to studying 3 A Levels with a Distinction final grade being equivalent to 3 A*s at A Level.  Note: The UAL Diploma is worth more UCAS points than BTEC, the difference between A and A*.

WHAT WILL I NEED?

You will need:

  • Four GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English Language or Maths or an equivalent Level 2 qualification at Merit (and Functional Skills in English at Level 2/GCSE English Language at grade 4 or above)
  • A portfolio of your art and design work

All applicants must have an interview to confirm that the course is suitable for them.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

The course is assessed throughout the year and with an end-of-course portfolio.

If you will be aged 16, 17 or 18 on 31st August prior to the start date of your course and you have the legal right to remain in the UK for the duration of your programme then your study with us will be free. Please see here for the documents you will need to show us.

WHAT CAN I DO AFTER?

This course will help you to move on to higher-level courses, such as a Bachelor of Arts, an apprenticeship or other employment.

Many of our students go to London College of Fashion or Central Saint Martins.

MEET SOME OF THE TEACHERS

Jody Roberts

Jody joined Westminster Kingsway College in 2003. Alongside teaching on a part-time basis, she has worked on numerous freelance projects including designing soft furnishing for Heals and interior fabrics for luxury yachts. She also worked for many years as a freelance fashion print designer.

With an awareness of re-working and re-using fabrics. Jody has recently retrained in embroidery design, quilting and patchwork techniques, Jody is keen to instil sustainable techniques and a consideration of environmental impact into her teaching and own practice. Jody is highly qualified with a BA (Hons) in Textile Design, an MA in Printed Textiles and a PGCE in Post Compulsory Education.


Steph Lee-Vae

Profile Overview: 

Steph Lee-Vae has experience of project management, strategic leadership, research initiatives and curriculum innovation. Steph is a skilled practitioner with students from versatile backgrounds in various roles, adopting a humanistic style of teaching in FE & HE setting; delivering on Level 1/2/3 and HE provisions. Steph has worked internationally delivering teacher training programmes. In delivery, Steph adopts methodologies to support individuals to allow achievement and high aspirations to be reached, having high success rates. Adopts a team approach, ensuring to create a positive and collaborative working ethos. Continuously updates subject knowledge through industry, training and research feeding this into the educational setting. A highly creative & ambitious individual whom, likes to drive innovation and technological development, key specialist areas being digital arts and technologies.

Robyn Hopkins

Robyn is a practicing artist who gained her MA in illustration in 2023 at Camberwell College of Art, where her primary study surrounded Welsh folklore, myth and storytelling. Continuing her practice Robyn is currently writing and illustrating books and comics as well as working freelance. Robyn joined the teaching staff at Westminster Kingsway College in 2022, teaching both digital and traditional illustration techniques. Before joining WestKing, Robyn taught art within a Welsh speaking primary school and SEN college. This informed her teaching practice well as she was able to develop teaching strategies to facilitate and meet the needs of individual learners.
