School of Hospitality and Culinary Arts opens its doors for Taster Day

Capital City College’s School of Hospitality and Culinary Arts welcomes aspiring culinary students to an entertaining and informative taster day.

Over 300 secondary school students attended a School Taster Day hosted by the School of Hospitality and Culinary Arts. The event, which took place on 4 November at the college’s Westminster centre was highly successful. Around 35  Capital City College (CCC)  students from a range of Professional Chef and Food and Beverage courses assisted with the delivery of the event.

The event began with a presentation by Miranda Quatrill, Curriculum Manager in Hospitality, who discussed the range of full-time courses and apprenticeships on offer. Attendees then had the opportunity to explore nine activity areas covering patisserie, kitchen and front of house.

In addition to meeting current CCC students, the secondary school visitors were able to view demonstrations to explore a range of interactive and informative activities covering ingredient selection, food preparation and various cooking techniques. The practical activities on offer included:

  • Writing in chocolate and learning about chocolate techniques
  • Bread shaping using salt dough
  • Cupcake decoration
  • Tasting edible cress and foraged wild foods
  • Exploring a fish display and filleting demonstration 
  • Guessing unusual fruits and vegetables
  • British apples quiz
  • Pasta making
  • Napkin folding
  • Salmon carving
  • Crêpes Suzette and flambé demonstration.
School of Hospitality and Culinary Arts opens its doors for Taster Day

The event showcased the extensive and varied range of full-time courses available to learners aged 16 to 18 at the School of Hospitality and Culinary Arts while offering prospective students the chance to interact with current CCC students and benefit from their insights into college life.

Miranda Quantrill, Curriculum Manager in Hospitality, said: “This was our first school taster day which proved extremely successful. There were many pupils who said they will apply for courses in the future and attend our open evenings. Our students enjoyed the experience and overall had a lot of fun with the interactive activities.”
