Students learn about the realities of life in the criminal justice system during an engaging event led by Kevin Koffi of Khady’s Dream
To celebrate Safer Learner Month, students at Capital City College (CCC) took part in a workshop hosted by Kevin Koffi, Founder and Director of award-winning organisation Khady’s Dream. During the interactive event, which took place on 21 November at the King’s Cross centre, 140 students from a range of Business, Electrical and Health and Social Care courses learned about the harsh realities of life in prison. The event was organised by Aleena Sharif and Elisha Lashley, Events and Activities Co-ordinators at CCC.
Khady’s Dream is a community interest company that seeks to prevent young people from entering the prison system by sharing real stories and insights from those with lived experience. Kevin Koffi’s experience of the UK criminal system began at the young age of 13, and he spent around 6 years in various prisons. Since his release in 2022, Kevin has channelled his energy into preventing other young people from committing crimes by sharing his personal experience and highlighting real-world individual consequences. Kevin has previously been featured in a viral CCC student podcast in which he talked candidly about the difficulties related to reducing youth crime in the UK
During the workshop, the students were actively engaged and showed interest in learning about Kevin’s life experience and his pathway to setting up Khady’s Dream. They were encouraged to ask questions about their understanding of prisons and Kevin was able to address common misconceptions. Kevin also shared valuable personal insights into the profound impact that incarceration has on both individuals and their families.
As part of the event, Kevin was able to highlight the impact of peer pressure, the consequences of leaving education and spoke openly about the things he missed out on while in prison. The students also learned about Kevin’s upcoming short film Before You Commit, which uses visual storytelling to educate young people about the consequences of crime and the realities of prison life.
This event represents just one of the many ways in which CCC supports students in finding the best pathway for future success. Our dedicated student support and wellbeing teams work alongside our career support and work experience teams to help students reach their personal goals.
