A member of Capital City College’s Training, Outreach and Administration Team has been recognised by the Mayor of London for her excellent work supporting the Ukrainian community in London.
Olena Melnyk, who is the Admin Team Leader at Capital City College, was Highly Commended in the Outreach and Engagement of Adults into Learning category for her work supporting the Ukrainian Community in London at the Mayor of London’s third annual Adult Learning Awards.
The awards event, which took place on 7 November at City Hall, celebrated the inspirational stories and achievements of Londoners, employers and community organisations. The awards included 10 categories and this year’s awards attracted a record number of nominations, with 329 individuals and organisations being put forward for an award.
Olena developed an idea to run a series of events in collaboration with the Ukrainian Education Hub to support members of the Ukrainian community as they transition into life in the UK.
The first informative event was aimed at entrepreneurs and provided support for new businesses as well as valuable advice on UK tax management. After the success of the first event, Olena went on to organise three further events covering Getting Employed in the UK, Starting a Business and Managing Taxes and a Marketing Forum.
Jackie Chapman, Group Principal at Capital City College (CCC) said: “We were so proud to nominate Olena for an award. She has worked diligently in her role but has also always gone out of her way to help others. When she approached me about finding a way to support the Ukrainian Education Hub, I gave her the freedom to consider any options. She went on to host several events on our sites, promoting learning opportunities and support and providing excellent networking, most of which was done in her own time.”
Olena said: “It means so much to me to be able to help the Ukrainian Community, even though I am far from home. It is really important to make a difference by offering free educational opportunities that help people gain new skills and, hopefully, discover new career opportunities. Getting recognised for this effort at the Mayor of London Award is a great honour. I am very grateful to Jackie Chapman, my managers Richard Drozda and Matt Herman, and all other colleagues who supported my initiative to work with the Ukrainian Hub. With my nomination and the Highly commended title I hope the Hub will get even more attention and potentially more networking opportunities.”
Congratulations Olena on being Highly Commended for your work in outreach and engagement at the Mayor of London’s Adult Learning Awards!
