Students from a range of creative courses at Capital City College (CCC) attended a Creative Careers Fair held at the college’s King’s Cross centre on 20 November.

The students came from a number of CCC’s creative courses including, Art, Design and Fashion courses, Digital Media and Creative Computing courses, Music and Music Production courses and Performing Arts courses.

The Creative Careers Fair, which was organised by members of the CCC Careers and Employability team, welcomed representatives from a number of universities to showcase their creative courses to potential students. The event also featured a number of interactive workshops, performances and talks led by industry professionals.

One of the highlights of the event was the Performing Arts workshop, led by professional actor and lecturer Kirsty McClaren. Kirsty currently teaches acting and musical theatre courses at the University of West London and led Performing Arts students in an engaging storytelling performance activity. This was followed by a discussion where students were able to explore their personal strengths and interests while learning more about pathways for progression.

Kirsty recently starred in the musical Lifeline, which explores the life of Sir Alexander Fleming. She has also appeared on screen in the Netflix hit series The Crown, the popular BBC show Doctors, and recently finished working on the film The Boys in the Boat, directed by George Clooney.

Mike Evans, Careers and Higher Education Lead, said: “Kirsty immediately captured her audience by sharing her experiences of Broadway and also of her experience appearing in The Crown – cue many student gasps and dropped jaws. It was really great to see their faces light up, and to also watch how they engaged and began to really consider university as a continuation of their education and acting journeys.”

Another highlight of the event was the Games and Animation workshop, led by Mark Simpson from the University of Staffordshire London. Mark lectures in 3D animation and games design and also works as a 3D Character animator. During the workshop, Mark talked to Games and Animations students about his experience of teaching artists and designers how to create games. He also shared insights into his work creating animations for games, advertising and short films. Mark was able to shed light on the range of specialisms within the role of a games artist such as environment artist, vehicle artist, weapon artist and lighting artist, which helped students to broaden their understanding of the industry.

Mike Evans said: “Mark really engaged our learners through his shared experiences, his presentation on the breadth of roles and opportunities in the gaming industry. It was also a great opportunity for our learners to seek advice on feedback on their portfolios and current pieces of work.”

The Creative Careers Fair gave students the opportunity to attend engaging expert-led workshops relating to their current studies while also supporting them in exploring education and career progression options within the creative sector.
