Join our Makers course – a fully funded six-week programme by Capital City College and Westminster City Council designed to build your confidence, develop key professional and entrepreneurial skills, and connect you with exciting career opportunities.

What will I gain from the course?

You will:

What are the course details?

The Makers course is an immersive six-week training and personal development programme designed to help you develop key professional, entrepreneurial, and employability skills through hands-on experience and industry mentorship.

Over the six weeks, you will participate in modules including:

  • Create and sell a product: Learn the process of creating, marketing, and selling a product—luxury chocolates—while gaining valuable retail and customer service experience. You’ll also get the chance to sell your creations at pop-up shops in iconic Westminster locations, such as Covent Garden’s Apple Market.
  • Induction: Meet your tutor and fellow students and get an overview of what the course will involve.
  • Getting career ready: Receive professional clothing fittings through charity partners and take part in job coaching sessions to prepare for work placements.
  • Visit high-profile companies: Engage with entrepreneurs and business leaders through site visits and learn about different professional roles within leading companies.
  • Creative Hub: Participate in a taster session led by a production partner and work on designing creative and marketing materials such as logos.
  • Digital Hub: Develop digital skills with insights from a technology professional, covering areas like digital marketing and big data.
  • Business Hub: Learn essential business skills such as product development, sales, marketing, branding and entrepreneurship, with a focus on developing the knowledge and confidence to launch and manage your own business.
  • Career development: Create a tailored career plan with the help of mentors, improve your CV, practice interview skills, and learn how to apply for jobs. You will also build an online professional presence through platforms like LinkedIn.
  • Work experience: Gain hands-on work experience with industry employers in sectors like hospitality, technology, and the built environment. These placements will provide real-world exposure and opportunities to apply the skills you’ve learned.

Who is this course for?

This course is designed for young people aged 16–24 in Westminster who are looking to improve their employability or enhance entrepreneurial skills. Whether you’re a young jobseeker aiming to boost your CV and gain work experience, or an aspiring entrepreneur interested in developing and selling your own products, the Makers course is tailored to help you achieve your career goals.

To be eligible for these courses you must:

  • Not in education, employment or training
  • Available for course dates, 7 October to 20 November 2024
  • Be aged 16 – 24
  • Be a Westminster resident

How much does the course cost?

Free for all eligible young Westminster residents, this course is funded by Capital City College and Westminster City Council. Travel costs and light lunch will be provided for students during course days.

What is the course date and location?

The Makers course will run from 7 October to 20 November 2024, with sessions held Monday to Wednesday each week over the six-week period.

The course will take place at the Victoria Centre with additional on-site sessions, including employer visits and work placements.
