Whatever your plans for the future, the ability to use English well will really help you. We offer a range of English courses to help you develop the language and communication skills you need for work and everyday life - even if you have been out of education for a while.
We will ask you to complete an assessment to help us choose the right level of teaching for you. Functional Skills are widely recognised across all sectors of employment and can be a stepping stone to GCSE.
Alongside the qualification, you will also complete a portfolio of English for work and study, helping you to develop skills such as effective communication, working together and looking at your personal and career development. You will need a folder and paper, pens (including highlighters) and the use of a dictionary. Your tutor may recommend reference material that your may find useful during the course.
You will take part in a range of learning activities to improve your use of practical English, including the skills of speaking and listening, reading, writing, and spelling.
All applicants must have an initial assessment and interview to confirm that the course is suitable for them.
Your progress will be monitored in a variety of ways, and we offer a range of qualifications to demonstrate your achievements.
If you will be aged 19 or older on 31 August in the year you begin your course, and have been resident in the UK/EU/EEA for the past 3 years, your course may be free, depending on your circumstances. Some courses will have other costs associated, such as for materials and trips. Many of our students are eligible for financial support when studying at college – please click here for more information.
