ABOUT THE COURSE

This introductory course will provide you with opportunities to develop a range of skills and techniques essential for successful performance in the sports and leisure industry. 

You will study units specific to sport, fitness and health in our state-of-the-art facilities, alongside employability units that will prepare you for work in the sport and leisure sector. The course combines theory and practical lessons, giving you the opportunity to apply your knowledge to real-life situations. Practical sessions will take place in our gym and sports hall, with work placements in the sports and leisure industry.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

Topics covered can include:

  • Taking part in fitness and exercise
  • Working in the sports and leisure industry
  • Planning and delivering coaching activities
  • The human body
  • Exercise and health
  • Diet and nutrition
  • Interview skills
  • Working in a team

WHAT WILL I NEED?

You do not need to have any previous qualifications.

All applicants must have an initial assessment and interview to confirm that the course is suitable for them.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

You will be assessed via a combination of observations during practical tasks and written coursework. Assessments throughout the course vary from assignment to assignment, giving you a chance to showcase your development through a variety of methods.

WHAT WILL IT COST?

Aged 16-18


If you will be aged 16, 17 or 18 on 31st August prior to the start date of your course and you have the legal right to remain in the UK for the duration of your programme then your study with us will be free. Please see here for the documents you will need to show us.

Some courses will have other associated costs, such as for specialist materials and trips. Many of our students are eligible for financial support, see here for details.

You will be required to wear sports-related clothing and footwear.

WHAT CAN I DO AFTER?

You could progress to employment in the Sport and Active Leisure sector or progress to Level 2 sport or fitness courses.

MEET SOME OF THE TEACHERS

Nike Caines

Nike Caines is a full-time sports tutor at the CONEL’s Enfield Centre teaching Fitness Instruction, Sports Psychology and Mental Well-being, Sports Injuries and First Aid and Nutrition and Health courses.

Nike has been a Further Education tutor since 2004 whose goal is for all learners to do well in their programmes of study courses and to enjoy time spent at CONEL.

Nike has a passion for mental well-being and physical fitness and loves teaching in the Sports and Fitness sector.


Yamini Bist

Yamini Bist is a dynamic and dedicated professional with a diverse background in education and sports coaching. As an enthusiastic KS4 support staff member, Yamini has developed skills in guiding and supporting students through their crucial key stage 4 educational journey, making a tangible impact on their academic growth.

In addition to their role in education, Yamini proudly serves as the head coach of the netball academy. This leadership position has allowed for the cultivation of a passion for sports in aspiring athletes while fostering their skills and enthusiasm for netball.

Yamini is also a lecturer for sports massage, sharing knowledge and insight with eager learners, helping them gain a deeper understanding of sports massage techniques and their importance in athlete performance and recovery.

With a strong commitment to education, Yamini is eager to contribute skills, leadership, and passion for education and sport and has a dedication to fostering growth and success in students learning.


Philip Hodgson

Philips's specialism is in Sports Science, especially anatomy and physiology. Philip is interested in the way the way the body works and how the complex systems all work together.

Philip has previously worked within secondary school PE departments and at Newham College in East London. He has been managing the sports department at CONEL since 2017 and has hobbies in football, basketball and beekeeping and is a huge Manchester City supporter!
