ABOUT THE COURSE

Are you interested in a career in rail engineering? This course comes with a guaranteed job after successful completion and will give you the knowledge and skills you need to work on rail tracks safely and effectively. Learn about track layout, health and safety, manual handling techniques, how to carry out a track inspection, and how to maintain the track itself. Successful candidates will be offered employment in the rail industry.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

This course includes the following knowledge and skills areas:

  • Personal track safety
  • DC conductor rails 
  • Track induction 
  • Rail track practical experience
  • Health and safety
  • First aid 
  • Rail plant and tool training

WHAT WILL I NEED?

You must be interested in a career in rail engineering, and be motivated and eager to learn. You must be aged 19 and above, and be able to attend college 5 days a week (Monday-Friday) for 8 weeks.

You must also meet the eligibility for residency:

  • Be able to provide a British or Irish Passport with three years’ residency in the EU/EEA

Or

  • Have a European Union Settlement Scheme residence (EUSS) with three years’ residency in the EU/EEA and UK and have lived in the UK before 31 December 2020

Or

  • Have a biometric residence card permitting study in the UK along with having lived in the UK for at least the last three years

and

  • Be able to provide current proof of JSA, IS, UC or ESA or proof of salary.

All learners will undergo a drug and alcohol test on the first week of the course.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

Assessment will be based on the activities you do on the track itself, and exams for first aid, personal track safety, and track induction. 

WHAT WILL IT COST?

You might have to cover the cost for the PPE, which is for safety boots, a hi-vis jacket and trousers which will be an investment as you will need these items when you start working.

WHAT CAN I DO AFTER?

This course is a fast-track route into employment, and if you complete the course successfully, you will be offered employment in the rail sector.
