About the Course

Working as pharmacy support staff can involve a wide range of responsibilities, including supporting the supply, preparation and assembly of medicines and products, issuing them to patients and other healthcare professionals, and assisting in providing advice to patients to help them to make effective use of their medicines.

This apprenticeship meets the minimum training requirements of the General Pharmaceutical Council of Great Britain (GPhC). 

Pharmacy support staff refers to staff within the pharmacy team who are not registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council of Great Britain (GPhC) but have important roles in:

  • the dispensing and supply of medicines or medical devices
  • advising on the use of medicines and medical device
  • assisting pharmacy professionals to provide pharmacy services to individuals

You will work under the supervision of a pharmacy professional to carry out tasks related dispensing and supply of medicines, provide information or deliver pharmacy services.

  • Principles of Health and Safety for Pharmacy Support Staff
  • Effective Teamwork within Pharmacy Services
  • Personal Development for Pharmacy Support Staff
  • Dispensing and Supply of Prescribed Medicines and Medicinal Products
  • Managing Pharmaceutical Stock

There are also two addtional units which you can select depending on your work area:

  • Principles of Safe Preparation and Manufacturing of Medicines and Pharmaceutical Products
  • Selling Over the Counter Medicines and Medicinal Products

Entry criteria

You will need:

  • To be aged 16 or older
  • To be employed for a minimum of 30 hours per week with 20% of your normal working hours set aside for you to complete your training and study
  • GCSEs at grade 4 or above in English, Maths and Science or a relevant Level 2 qualification and Functional Skills at Level 2 in English and Maths

All applicants must have an interview and assessment in English and Maths to confirm that the apprenticeship is suitable for them.

Employers may also set additional entry requirements, as a prerequisite to working with them.

How is the apprentice assessed?

Apprenticeships are assessed by classroom study coursework and assessments along with on-the-job practicals.

Occupational profile

On completion of this course (Pearson BTEC Level 2 Certificate in the Principles and Practise
for Pharmacy Support Staff), or you can progress onto further study in this field or into a career in the health and social care sector.
