ABOUT THE COURSE

This course will equip you with practical skills for a range of salon activities, from conducting client consultations to cutting and dressing hair. You will learn how different shampoos and conditioners affect the hair and scalp and will explore a variety of colouring and lightening products and techniques.

You will learn how to work in accordance with health and safety procedures to ensure the well-being of your clients, your colleagues, and yourself. As well as working in the college's own hairdressing salon, you will also have the opportunity to do a period of work experience. You will also work on improving your English and Maths skills.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

Topics covered can include:

  • Promoting additional services or products to clients
  • Providing hairdressing consultation services
  • Cutting hair using basic techniques
  • Colouring hair using a variety of techniques
  • Styling and dressing hair
  • Perming hair
  • Shampooing and conditioning hair
  • Creating an image based on a theme
  • Working with colleagues within beauty-related industries
  • Health and Safety

WHAT WILL I NEED?

You will need:

  • Four GCSEs at grade 3 or above, including English Language and Maths or equivalent Level 1 qualification
  • A reference from your previous school/college

All applicants must have an interview and assessment to confirm that the course is suitable for them.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

You will be assessed on the practical work that you do in the hairdressing salon.

WHAT WILL IT COST?

You may need to pay for a kit and uniform, depending on your financial circumstances.

WHAT CAN I DO AFTER?

On successful completion of the course you can develop your skills further through a range of courses in Level 3, and above, courses in hairdressing, or progress to employment.
