WHAT WILL I STUDY?

You will develop a foundation in science by learning about basic concepts in biology, chemistry, and physics. You will also learn how to conduct simple scientific experiments and record and interpret data. You will build on your foundational knowledge by delving deeper into topics like human biology, chemistry in everyday life, and the principles of energy. You will also learn how to use more advanced scientific equipment and techniques.

On the Level 1 Introductory course, you will further develop your skills and knowledge by exploring topics like environmental science, forensic science, and the uses of technology in science. You will also develop practical skills like measuring and recording data and presenting scientific information.

Overall, this course is designed to give you a solid understanding of key scientific concepts and techniques and to prepare you for further study or work in the field of science.

WHAT WILL I NEED?

You will need 4 GCSEs at grade 2 or above including Science, English and Maths. Functional skills at Entry Level 3 are acceptable alternative qualifications for English and maths.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?

Assessment through coursework is an essential component of the BTEC Applied Science courses at City and Islington College, and it's an approach that offers learners a range of exciting opportunities to showcase their knowledge, skills, and abilities.

From writing essays and presenting their findings to demonstrating their lab skills and conducting experiments, learners will engage with a wide range of assessment methods that will challenge and inspire them. WHAT CAN I DO AFTER?

Successful completion of this course and accompanying English and Maths qualifications will enable you to progress into Level 2 programmes in Applied Science, Forensic Science, Health Studies and Engineering.

MEET SOME OF THE TEACHERS

Jennifer Dean-Hill

Jennifer has been teaching at City and Islington College since 2002 as a lecturer in Complementary Therapies. She was given tutorial responsibilities immediately due to her excellent rapport with learners and supportive ethos with learners who were returning to study.

She began her teaching journey in 1998 providing healthy living workshops and seminars in her local youth club working with young people aged 13-21 years. Jennifer later joined the board of directors and was there for twelve years managing activities that were local council-based to improve the well-being of young people in the area.

Jennifer has spent 21 years' experience teaching in Further Education, inspiring, motivating, and guiding learners through BTEC qualifications in Applied Science and Health and Social Care. She is experienced in Biology, particularly Nutrition and Psychology. She delivers across Levels 1-3 and is engaging, dynamic and always enthusiastic.


Poonam Leekha

Poonam joined Capital City College Group in 2020 as a Chemistry Lecturer to teach Applied and Medical Science. Poonam has 20 years of experience as a Senior Chemistry Teacher and Head of the Science department with excellent presentation skills and is a goal-driven achiever with strong time management and organizational skills. Poonam also possesses excellent classroom management skills, a team player with a consistent positive approach.

During previous roles, Poonam has conducted various workshops and implemented various “Innovative Teaching Methods” to inspire students to learn and understand the concepts of science by enhancing their curiosity and engagement. Poonam has also worked as a Chemist in a Pharmaceutical company part-time.

Additionally, Poonam has been an author and editor of many books including Holy Faith, Abc Book of Science, Class VII and Wiley Company. Poonam has worked through various science research-based projects and won prizes at the Google Science Fair, IRIS and Ignite Science Fair and is part of the SET education society and achieved QTLS.


Alison Wood

Alison has taught on many STEM-related vocational courses since joining the Centre for Applied Sciences in 2020, including the BTEC Extended Certificate in Applied Sciences and Health and Social Care. Prior to this, she was a post doctorate research fellow at the UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology where she worked with human stem cell models of neurodegeneration and high throughput technologies for therapeutic drug screening. She has worked within and collaboratively with industries such as GlaxoSmithKline so brings relevant experience and skills to prepare learners for work in academia and industry.  

Alison particularly enjoys teaching Scientific Skills which challenge learners to be inquisitive, analytic, and critical of scientific data and methodologies. Her recent focus has been on the BTEC First in Applied Sciences where she has developed her skill set with this cohort and enjoyed building a strong rapport with learners and building their confidence.


Chuks Ahuchogu

Chuks comes with years of experience as an Integrity Engineer processing piping and pressure systems. He holds a B.Eng. and MSc. in Engineering from Newcastle University.

Skilled at explaining seemingly challenging concepts to young people, his vast teaching experience in Physics, Engineering and Maths spans across BTEC Levels 1-3 and HNC qualifications. He joined City and Islington College in March 2023 as a lecturer in Physics having worked in similar roles in other colleges within and outside London.
