About

The Custody and Detention apprenticeship will equip individuals with the specialised skills and knowledge to excel in the demanding field of custody and detention operations. Through a comprehensive training program, apprentices gain expertise in security, risk assessment, 
communication, and conflict resolution, ensuring safe and efficient custodial practices.

Who is it for?

This course is for:

  • Newly trained Detention Custody Officers to the industry
  • Prior experience in a custodial environment desirable
  • Individuals presently working in a custodial environment.

Training

Included in the programme:

  • Occupational duties (KSBs)
  • Functional Skills English and Maths Level 2

End Point Assessment

3 months in duration and contains a long answer exam (90 minutes) and a professional discussion. The Passing grades are pass and distinction.

Next Steps

  • Detention Custody Instructor: As an operational DCO with experience there is the opportunity to develop as an instructor, undertaking a teaching qualification and being a part of the delivery team. Delivering to new recruits into the business, delivering on the six-week initial Detention Custody Officer Training.
  • Detention Custody Training Manager: As an instructor you have the opportunity to develop into a Manager role, overseeing the planning of the six-week training, complying with contractual standards, ensuring the internal quality assurance is to the standard required, coordinating the timetable for the training weeks and the geographical logistics. Manage the team of instructors and their development.
  • As a Detention Custody Officer: working in the Custodial Environment, Immigration setting, there are career options that can be considered, the career pathways once qualified and operational are: ICE (Country escorting) Detention Custody Officer
    Professionally developed through the Level 3 Custody and Detention Apprenticeship, operationally working with a team Escorting residents from the airport, police holding rooms and transporting from prisons to immigration removal centres. ICE (In country escorting).
  • Detention Custody Operations Manager: Taking on a leadership and management role, leading a team of DCOs in their daily activity through shift patterns, working with rosters ensuring compliance with regulated contractual standards. Ensuring the welfare of the DCO and managing their development into the role.
  • ICE (In-country escorting) Senior Detention Manager: Developing into the role of the Senior Detention Manager will take on larger responsibilities, overseeing several teams, whether airport or vehicle-based, ensuring the health and safety of staff and residents, problem-solving and being solution-focused. Always working under pressure and being responsive. always ensuring compliance and actively supporting the professional development of their teams.
  • OSE (Overseas Escorting) Senior Detention Manager: Developing into the role of the Senior Detention Manager will take on larger responsibilities, overseeing several overseas teams, ensuring the health and safety of staff and residents, problem-solving and being solution-focused. Always working under pressure and being responsive. always ensuring compliance and actively supporting the professional development of their teams.
  • OSE (Overseas Escorting) Detention Custody Operations Manager: Taking on a leadership and management role, leading a team of DCOs in their daily activity through shift patterns, working with rosters ensuring compliance with regulated contractual standards. Ensuring the welfare of the DCO and managing their development into the role.
  • OSE (Overseas Escorting) Detention Custody Officer: Oversees Escorting role, taking residents back to their country of origin and escorting them on flights.
