Admin Team Leader Olena Melnyk is Highly Commended at Mayor of London Adult Learning Awards

A member of Capital City College’s Training, Outreach and Administration Team has been recognised by the Mayor of London for her excellent work supporting the Ukrainian community in London.

Olena Melnyk, who is the Admin Team Leader at Capital City College, was Highly Commended in the Outreach and Engagement of Adults into Learning category for her work supporting the Ukrainian Community in London at the Mayor of London’s third annual Adult Learning Awards.

The awards event, which took place on 7 November at City Hall, celebrated the inspirational stories and achievements of Londoners, employers and community organisations. The awards included 10 categories and this year’s awards attracted a record number of nominations, with 329 individuals and organisations being put forward for an award.

Olena developed an idea to run a series of events in collaboration with the Ukrainian Education Hub to support members of the Ukrainian community as they transition into life in the UK.

The first informative event was aimed at entrepreneurs and provided support for new businesses as well as valuable advice on UK tax management. After the success of the first event, Olena went on to organise three further events covering Getting Employed in the UK, Starting a Business and Managing Taxes and a Marketing Forum.

Jackie Chapman, Group Principal at Capital City College (CCC) said: “We were so proud to nominate Olena for an award. She has worked diligently in her role but has also always gone out of her way to help others. When she approached me about finding a way to support the Ukrainian Education Hub, I gave her the freedom to consider any options. She went on to host several events on our sites, promoting learning opportunities and support and providing excellent networking, most of which was done in her own time.”

Olena said: “It means so much to me to be able to help the Ukrainian Community, even though I am far from home. It is really important to make a difference by offering free educational opportunities that help people gain new skills and, hopefully, discover new career opportunities. Getting recognised for this effort at the Mayor of London Award is a great honour. I am very grateful to Jackie Chapman, my managers Richard Drozda and Matt Herman, and all other colleagues who supported my initiative to work with the Ukrainian Hub. With my nomination and the Highly commended title I hope the Hub will get even more attention and potentially more networking opportunities.”

Congratulations Olena on being Highly Commended for your work in outreach and engagement at the Mayor of London’s Adult Learning Awards!

Nail services students showcase their therapeutic skills and support community event

A group of Level 2 Nail Services students provided a range of treatments at The Black Communities Healthy Living & Lifestyle Fair.

A group of six Capital City College (CCC) students from the Level 2 Nail Services Diploma gained hands-on experience at The Black Communities Healthy Living & Lifestyle Fair on 19 October.

The event, which was held at Chestnuts Community Centre in Tottenham, was organised by 4U2newsmag and aimed to empower and inform community members by providing access to a variety of health and wellbeing resources and services. The event fostered a sense of community while promoting healthy living.

The event attracted 524 guests and featured around 50 exhibitors offering unique services and valuable information. The event welcomed an array of health-related stalls and presentations including breastfeeding experts, a talk on Sickle Cell Disease and NHS HIV testing. A healthy community lunch was available and a lively dance performance by Candy Dance Stars added to the vibrant atmosphere.

The Beauty Zone, which was a therapeutic area set up and delivered by Capital City College’s Nail Services students, was incredibly popular. The students worked hard throughout the day to provide hand massages, shape and paint services as well as paraffin wax treatments. The event provided an opportunity for students to showcase their practical skills, undergo assessments and promote the college’s beauty salon, The Stylezone, while working alongside their classmates. Their time at the event also contributed towards the work experience requirements for their Nail Services course.

Hale Ibrahim, a Level 2 Nail Services involved in the event, said: “I enjoyed the day, everyone was really friendly and it gave me the opportunity to complete my manicure unit under assessment conditions. Also doing clients back to back (we were really busy) helped me to meet industry standards for timing. I also promoted the colleges’ services to my clients.”

Another student, Tracey Moor, said: “One of the ladies I provided treatment to rarely has the opportunity to enjoy any sort of therapeutic service, and was grateful for the manicure service provided to her. She enjoyed the massage especially, and her appreciation of the service was wonderful to witness. I was able to gain real life experience related to contra-indications that therapists or nail technicians may come across.”

Student Sherekia Barton said: “Everyone was friendly and welcoming. The clients benefited from the treatments and were happy with the services I provided. I also promoted Stylezone to my clients and It was a great day. The day gave me real life experience of working in a salon.”

Diannia Scantlebury, Beauty Therapy Lecturer, organised the student participation in the event for the third consecutive year. She said: “Once again, the Black Communities Healthy Living & Lifestyle Fair provided the local community with invaluable information related to health and sustainability, opportunities to network and opportunities for Capital City College students to gain valuable industry experience. A wonderfully positive day!”

Engineering students explore prospective pathways with work experience placements

Capital City College students participated in work experience placements with industry leaders in the field of engineering.

Three engineering students from Capital City College (CCC) completed work experience placements with leading engineering company Sir Robert McAlpine and affiliated firms within their supply chain.

The Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Engineering students, who are based at CCC’s Angel centre, completed their work experience placements from 28 October to 1 November. As part of their Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Engineering, students are required to complete 70 hours of work experience, with at least 35 hours taking place in person.

Gracy Pedro Sebastiao completed a placement with Sir Robert McAlpine, a family-owned building and civil engineering company. The company is well-known for its work in engineering and construction across multiple sectors such as infrastructure, heritage, commercial, arena and stadium, healthcare, education and nuclear energy. During the placement, Gracy joined professional engineers, including chief engineers, on site and learned more about the practicalities of working within his chosen field.

Gracy said: “The Sir Robert McAlpline work experience helped me gain an insight into field work and the engineering world. By meeting with their engineers and learning about what they do, I have a clear grasp of where I want to be in the future. The staff and environment were incredibly welcoming as well as informative and answering any questions I had. They gave me a clear grasp of my ambitions, and I thoroughly enjoyed meeting new people in the field I am interested in.”

Boris Stselkov completed a work experience placement with with Phoenix ME, a market leader in designing, installing and commissioning mechanical and electrical systems across multiple sectors. During his placement, Boris was able to build on his existing knowledge and learn more about degree apprenticeships offered by work experience partners.

Boris said: “My work experience at Phoenix Mechanical was highly rewarding, thanks to the supportive and knowledgeable staff who guided me. Their expertise greatly enhanced my learning and technical skill development.”

Chris Robinson, Project Manager at Phoenix ME said, “Boris was a great work experience candidate. He has been informed of our degree apprenticeships as he is the caliber we are looking for.”

Another Engineering student, Connor Toogood, completed a placement at Imperial Ductwork, a leading manufacturer and installer of Ductwork Ventilation Systems.

All three work experience placements were centred around the Museum of London’s new Smithfield site, which is due to open in 2026. Sir Robert McAlpine is the appointed Construction Manager, Phoenix ME are working on the design, installation and commissioning of mechanical and electrical systems and Imperial Ductwork are taking on the installation of Ductwork ventilation systems.

At CCC, we place a high value on work experience and all full-time study programmes include a placement with the relevant sector. As these recent placements demonstrated, work experience placements benefit both students and our work experience providers. Students have the opportunity to explore prospective pathways in greater detail and companies can share information about training and apprenticeship programmes with a broader range of potential applicants.

Capital City College student wins Organising Award at TUC conference

Award-winning Union Representative Hadi Naqui tells us how his studies at Capital City College have helped him grow into and define his role.

Capital City College (CCC) student Hadi Naqui was awarded the Organising Award at this year’s TUC Congress Awards. After winning a regional Organising Award, he qualified for the national award and was selected as the winner of the national Organising Award, which he proudly accepted at this year’s TUC conference in Brighton in September.

After taking up a role as a supermarket delivery driver in Croydon in 2019, Hadi recognised the importance of better representation for workers and became a member of Usdaw (The Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers).

A year later, in August 2020, Hadi became a Union Representative. Hadi’s background working in mortgages gave him a strong understanding of compliance and the importance of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) so he has always been keen to broaden his understanding of key topics to better support his members. He chose to enhance his skills and knowledge with CCC courses and completed Shop Steward (Level 1 and Advanced) courses before enrolling on the TUC Diploma in Employment Law provided by the college.

During the pandemic, Hadi’s workplace faced a number of issues. He joined a team of 7 reps and was instrumental in growing that team to 20 members by providing guidance and support to his peers. Hadi has represented union members at his workplace on a number of issues and ensured that their rights have been protected. He has also organised campaigns to enhance union vitality, promoted anti-racism initiatives, and continues to ensure that members are kept abreast of developments, are aware of their rights and understand their capacity to influence their working lives.

We spoke to Hadi to find out more about how his studies at Capital City College supported his role as a Union Representative.

How did your Shop Steward training help you in your role as Union Representative?

When I started out and was first representing people for the union, I saw my role as similar to that of a lawyer. I banged my fists on the table, jumped in and answered on their behalf, everything that went against the ACAS code of practice because that’s what I thought a rep [Union Representative] should do.

When I got onto the Shop Stewards course, I learned to focus on other things within the union role like recruitment and campaigning. With my shop steward training I could bring it all together and when the pandemic kicked in my mind was more open to what the role of the rep was, and what the existing reps could be doing better.

I liked knowing the power of the rep and finally understanding how to do things. As a result, we were able to put action plans in place. When I joined the union, we were at 44% density with membership but now we’re up to 77%. We’ve gradually changed the culture by bringing in new reps and, during the pandemic, we were able to stop our drivers from putting themselves in harm’s way. Everything was already in policy, but no-one knew where to find it so I found it and plastered it out there.

How did the Capital City College tutors support you with your studies?

They supported me throughout. They gave me time out when I needed it and were always available to talk about the course.

The best thing about the course tutors is that they have the experience and authority to talk about these subjects. When they share their experiences, they’re relating the theory to the practical side, so we can visualise how things work. It’s great talking about theory, we know theory inside out, but unless you know how to apply the theory, it’s meaningless.

One of our tutors, Terry, who has sadly since passed away, encouraged us to organise, mobilise and antagonise. Our other tutor, Fred Behardien, reminded us that a union is only as good as the reps on the ground, so we had to make sure we knew what we were doing.

What do you like about your current course at Capital City College?

I chose the TUC Diploma in Employment Law provided by the college because it was an online course. I’m loving it and Mike Kidd, the tutor, is so supportive. It’s another remote course and I’m really enjoying meeting people from all over the country and different unions. There’s something about proximity – when you have proximity and association with more of the same people, you feel adjusted and inspired to keep doing what you’re doing. It’s so useful that we’re actually trying to arrange for this course to be run for Usdaw reps.

How is your current course influencing your role?

The course itself has influenced my role in the union in more ways than one. It’s given more confidence to talk about legislation. I’ve learned about the Health and Safety at Work Act and the Race Relations Act that inspired the Equalities Act and have been able to apply them to my role.

I’ve been able to show other union members what their rights are and have encouraged them to use dynamic risk assessment as they carry out their roles.

What have you found challenging about completing your courses?

My greatest obstacle has always been time management. Thankfully the union allows time out for me to complete my studies.

How do you feel about winning this year’s TUC Organising Award?

It still hasn’t sunk in. I really have to thank my mentor Sucha Singh and my Capital City College tutor Fred Behardian for all their support.

It is overwhelming and wonderful to win this award, to receive national recognition not just for the work I do as a rep, but for the team of reps and members in my workplace, along with the wider Usdaw family. I work in grocery delivery and started just before the lockdowns were imposed. We are key workers delivering an essential service, and that was barely recognised until the pandemic. I am proud to be an Usdaw rep, standing up for my members, helping them get a better deal and giving them a voice.

What’s next for you?

I love what I’ve done but there’s still some jealousy and prejudice to face. I’m half Indian, half Pakistani and there’s an unconscious bias against Asians in many places. When people see someone like me, it can throw them off guard. In the future, I’d like to become an area organiser or a politician.

Hadi’s success as a Union Representative and subsequent award was also recognised by his union Usdaw.

Paddy Lillis, Usdaw General Secretary said: “Hadi is a shining example of the army of trade union workplace reps Usdaw and all unions have across the country. He has greatly improved union membership in his workplace and supported many colleagues when they needed help.

Paddy added: “Hadi has represented members on a whole range of issues, ensuring that their rights are upheld and that the correct processes are followed. […] Hadi has also run campaign activities to tackle racism, including the promotion of Show Racism the Red Card. In difficult, sometimes polarised times, Hadi has promoted a message of acceptance whilst helping to make it absolutely clear that there is no room for racism.”

Congratulations Hadi on winning the TUC Organiser Award!

Capital City College Professional Chef students impress and innovate during Korean cooking competition

A group of Professional Chef students from Capital City College’s School of Hospitality and Culinary Arts showcased Korean-inspired dishes during a cooking competition.

Students from Capital City College’s (CCC) School of Hospitality and Culinary Arts have taken part in a Hansik Contest, which is a Korean cooking competition.

The event, which took place at The Vincent Rooms in the college’s Westminster centre involved 11 students from the Professional Chef – Level 2 Diploma course and was sponsored by the Korean Food Promotion Institution (KFPI) and Cuisine.K of CJ Foods.

All students from the course were invited to submit a written entry to the competition before Chef Lecturers Jose Souto and Jonathan Warner selected 11 entrants to take part in the practical competition.

During the competition, the students were challenged to develop and produce their own dishes featuring Korean ingredients and sauces. A number of mouth-watering dishes were served to the judges, including Tenderloin Steak with Doenjang and Gochujang, Root Vegetable Risotto with Gochujang and Duck with Doenjang.

The judging panel included esteemed industry professionals such as Executive Chef Jihun Maxime Kim from the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Mayfair and Founder and Chef of Sollip, Woongchul Park, London’s only Korean Michelin-starred restaurant, as well as Chef Lecturers Jose Souto and Jonathan Warner.

Following an intense round of judging, Professional Chef – Level 2 Diploma student Matthew Clifford was awarded first place for his dish of Cod with Ginger and Doenjang. Matthew was inspired by Korean pottery and had been exploring Korean culture in preparation for the competition. Oscar Snipp won second prize for his dish of Gochujang Milanese, and third place went to Joe Margaritis for his dish of Noodles with Chicken Broth and Kimchi. The winning dishes will be presented in a recipe booklet.

The Korean Ambassador to the UK, Yoon Yeo-cheol attended the event and gave a speech congratulating the finalists on the quality of their dishes and their fusion ideas. He also presented winning students with their prizes.

Chef Woongchul Park said: “It’s a big development to have a Korean food competition at a major culinary arts school in London. It invites aspiring chefs to explore the wealth of Korean ingredients and to add them to their culinary repertoire.”

The School of Hospitality and Culinary Arts also celebrated Korean cuisine earlier this year with a series of culinary events during Korean Cuisine month. Paul Jervis, Head of Hospitality and Culinary Arts, said: “Korean food is incredibly popular here in London, so it’s natural for us to embrace it and encourage students to explore Korean ingredients and cooking methods.
